There was some talk earlier this week that J.J. Abrams was looking at hiring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers to play the lead in Star Wars Episode VII, but it seems that Abrams instead made a move behind the scenes on the project in the form of hiring costume designer Michael Kaplan.

Like Rhys-Meyers (Mission: Impossible III), Kaplan is an Abrams veteran who designed costumes for M:I3 and both Star Treks as well as Blade Runner, Fight Club and Pearl Harbor. Kaplan confirmed his involvement via Clothes on Film:

I am very excited to be working on Star Wars. I’m so looking forward to collaborating, once again, with JJ.

This is interesting news if your a fan of the artistic side of movie making. Kaplan did a great job updating the classic Trek uniforms for the new movies, so it will be interesting to see what he can do with the Wars archives. It will also be interesting to see what other Abrams regulars will also sign up for Episode VII: Michael Giacchino (composer)? Scott Chambliss (art director)? Dan Mindel (cinematographer)? I guess we’ll see.

Disney is still aiming to get Star Wars Episode VII in theaters by summer 2015.
