Cornish to Succeed Abrams as ‘Trek’ Director?

attack-the-block-07272011

With Star Trek Into Darkness now out in theaters, J.J. Abrams now turns his attention to his next film, Star Wars Episode VII, but what of Star Trek 3 (or 13 depending on your numbering)? Well, Abrams hasn’t ruled it out, but let’s face facts: making a Star Wars movie is probably going to eat up the filmmakers’ life for the next couple of years.

Now it’s possible that Paramount, the studio behind the Trek franchise might wait for Abrams to be freed from his Star Wars commitments, but considering that the soonest the Abrams could get to work on it is summer 2015 (if Episode VII itself isn’t delayed, and it may be) does Paramount want to wait that long for him? Especially seeing as how 2016 will be Star Trek’s 50th birthday?

Well if you’re thinking what Paramount’s thinking, then you’re thinking it might be time for a contingency plan, and someone has told as much to Latino Review’s El Mayimbe.

“I guess y’all wanna know about who might be directing STAR TREK 3 if it ever goes. Heard Joe Cornish BUT also heard he’s on a list of names. I’m NOT saying Joe Cornish is the guy, but what I am saying is the he is definitely one of NUMEROUS contenders.” – @elmayimbe

Fascinating. Cornish, as you may know, is the director of the cult hit Attack the Block, and he co-wrote the screenplays for The Adventures of Tintin and the upcoming Ant Man, so he’d be a pretty interesting pick to helm a new Star Trek movie. However, it’s important to point out right now that he’s not the only pick. Similar to the case of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which Cornish was also on the short list for, it appears that there are a number of names being considered. Still, it’s all dependent on J.J. right now, and why not considering that he’s now made two very successful Trek movies.

How about it Bastards, who would you rather seen direct the next Trek: J.J. Abrams or Joe Cornish?
