In the Marvel cinematic universe any actor can be a hero, just look at what it did to the career of Clark Gregg and Agent Coulson. The super spy seamlessly handled all the heroic details on Earth, but what about when the action takes place off world like in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy? You can’t call up Agent Couslon and send him to outer space and have him deal with it.
Of course you can’t. But according to rumors circulating over at HitFix Wreck-It Ralph star John C. Reilly in talks for a limited, but substantial, role as former Nova Corps leader Rhomann Dey.
The casting is a bit surprising as John is more known for his comedic roles, but in a movie where you have a talking raccoon and battles in space, Reilly is a perfect fit for all the chaos. Don’t expect Reillyto be pulling on the tights anytime soon though, because this iteration of the Xandarian hero will be human. But that won’t really affect the role as Dey, whose powers were passed to current Nova Corps leader Richard Rider, will be more of a handler to the Guardians in a role similar to Agent Coulson’s in his appearances in the Iron Man and Thor solo features.
And while the role is limited, as he’ll remain on Earth, Guardians director James Gunn and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige have said the recurring role is contracted for multiple pictures.
It’s a long shot, but if you’re reading this John Reilly, take the part.
