It’s a semi-well-known fact that Hugh Jackman has played (or rather will play once The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past are released) the same character in seven different comic book movies, which is a bit of record. And like the recent discussions about Robert Downey Jr.’s future as Iron Man – a role his played in a mere five film projects by the way – some are wondering how long Jackman might still be able to play Marvel’s merriest mutant.
Well, the question was asked in the new edition of Entertainment Weekly, and Jackson’s response was decisive, and then somewhat less decisive. “I wasn’t even sure after the first [stand-alone] film if I would do another,” the actor said. “I won’t say never, because I’m still loving it. But there would have to be a pretty compelling reason.”
Adding fuel to that fire was producer Hutch Parker, who added that it was his opinion that recasting the part, “feels somewhat blasphemous.” Considering that Jackman came out of Nowhere, Australia and became an instant star playing Wolverine in the first X-Men movie, Parker’s point-of-view on the matter is hardly surprising and understandable. But no matter how the actor feels, if both The Wolverine and Days are box office successes it’s going to be hard for Jackman to refuse the opportunity to come back and play Logan again. After all, it’s not like Jackman’s letting himself go or anything.
