It’s about damn time Vertigo‘s Fables is getting the movie treatment, tapping into two of the moment’s hottest markets, fairy tales and comic books, with a single property. The dark, moody, and a little noir-ish spin on classic fable characters is perfect for an audience chompin’ at the bit for more fairy tales. There’s already a video game based on Bill Willingham‘s comic set to release later this year, and today THR is reporting a movie’s in the works, too! David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, also of those widely popular Harry Potter films, are producing and they’ve tapped Jeremy Slater to script. Slater hasn’t done much, and is currently working on the Fantastic Four reboot, but I’ll accept Heyman and Clifford’s choice on good faith.
Nikolaj Arcel is attached to direct, and while I’m sure many of you are unfamiliar with him, I recently watched his Danish film, A Royal Affair – I’ll admit, only because it starred Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen – and was impressed. You can catch it on Netflix Instant. It’s most definitely moody and I’m confidant Arcel’s style will be a great match for bringing Fables to the big screen.
Here’s a short little briefer on what Fables is all about,
When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the “mundys,” their name for normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society that they call Fabletown. From their exclusive luxury apartment buildings on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, these creatures of legend must fight for their survival in the new world.
I get a little giddy when I start thinking, if done well, Fables could become a phenomenal film franchise. There’s loads of material to pull from, and it’s far more original than most of the gritty, re-imagined fairy tales we’ve seen lately. Are you excited for a Fables movie?
