Disclaimer: Right now, this is just a rumor, but since all of our friends are jumping off the bridge, we’ll do the same… sorry Mom.
Benicio Del Toro is reportedly going to play The Collector, aka Taneleer Tevan in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and not Thanos, as had been speculated about in a way similar to the way that we are speculating that he will play the Collector.
Who is The Collector? Your basic deep thinking, semi-psychic, immortal cosmic hoarder and universal elder. The Collector collects — planets, artifacts, hummels — all of it. A hobby he picked up after his equally immortal wife, Matani, got wind of Whitney Houston’s “Didn’t We Almost Have it All?” and decided that loving him did not make life worth living.
Surviving Matani and joining The Collector is their daughter, Carina, who may also show up in Guardians as the role that Ophelia Loveibond (No shit, that’s a real name.) was cast to play.
By the way, The Collector is not a classic villain archetype, per se. Sure, he’s tried to put the Avengers up on his shelf in the past, but he’s also painfully aware of the threat that Thanos poses to the universe with his scrotal chin and his desire to conquer the universe and tea bag us all.
All in all, a pretty awesome and meaty character should Gunn and company go in that direction and Del Toro — who was supposed to play Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness once upon a time — would be perfect in the role and surely someone who would stand out among the host of other recent additions to the cast like Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, and Glenn Close and her vulvular neck.
