Choosing to use her magic for good rather than evil, The Hollywood Reporter is, uh, reporting Helena Bonham Carter is joining Disney‘s and Kenneth Branagh‘s live-action Cinderella. I’ve been following the development of this fairy tale feature for some time and it’s good to see how nicely this cast is shaping up. Bonham Carter will be fairy godmothering Lily James‘s Cinderella, whose evil step-sisters are to played by Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey)and Holliday Granger (The Borgias). Cate Blanchet has been long attached as the wicked stepmother and only recently we learned Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden will play the prince. Huh? Wonder what freed up his schedule?
Shooting is expected to begin in London in the fall. The role of The Fairy Godmother will be larger than it was in Disney’s animated classic as Bonham Carter will be, “disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is.” Bonham Carter as an old beggar woman?! Why, I never! Obviously, this isn’t Bonham Carter’s first Disney gig. She played the Red Queen in 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, but here’s hoping this flick proves to be better. And her head not so freakishly large.
Are you at all excited for Disney’s Cinderella? What of Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother?
