Just when you think the Hollywood is scrapping the bottom of that barrel of movie ideas, a movie like Independence Day, that should have had a sequel or two back in its day, must have been clinging to the barrel’s lid is found and brought back to life. In this case it gets kicked into overdrive when Twentieth Century Fox formally announced plans to make, not one, but TWO ID4 sequels, currently titled ID Forever Part I and Part II.

As director Roland Emmerich promotes his latest production, White House Down, he’s been fielding a ton of questions about the possibility of an Independence Day sequel. Now that the official word has been put out by Fox, Emmerich has this to say about the production and who will and won’t be back:

Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film and the other half people who are new.

Smith’s co-star Jeff Goldblum has been rumored to be returning to reprise his role, but will fans miss Smith? What others might be coming back and which do you think should be back?

Ar these two films actual sequels or some kind of reboot? Emmerich explained it this way:

“We’re not doing a total reboot, we’re doing something that’s totally unusual.”

Some kind of hybrid mixture of a reboot and sequel, I guess that makes sense to some Hollywood Suit somewhere. What do you think? Can this franchise get kick started without Smith?
