Things are moving rather quickly in the Disney/Marvel camp, having only yesterday unveiled a slew of release dates for upcoming films like Cinderella and another unnamed Marvel movie. This unnamed project is part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Phase 3, which as we reported yesterday looks like this,
Phase 3, as it stands now, will begin with Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015. From there, it will continue on May 6th, 2016 with an unnamed project. The year after, there will be a May 5th movie, again unnamed. The new project has been shoe-horned in two months after the second project, on July 8th, 2016.
Ant-Man was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con last year, but word is still out on the as-of-yet-unconfirmed-but-considered-very-likely Doctor Strange movie. Knowing the character’s a personal favorite of Marvel’s Miyagi, Kevin Feige, and the curious rumors about which villains could possibly appear in the flick, I wouldn’t count out an announcement in Hall H this year absolutely confirming the film’s inclusion in Phase 3 as one of those “unnamed projects.”
Well today, El Mayimbe (the Lord Varys of superhero news) broke some news on Latino-Review that if true – and considering the site’s track record, it is – the Doctor Strange movie is very real and will be announced very soon. His sources have reported the script from Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer received an almost unanimous positive response from the suits and Marvel is really, really excited for this one.
Sources of CBM seem to back up this claim, saying,
Strange is being groomed to be the next Iron Man. The studio needs a new ‘hub’ character going into Phase 3 and beyond, as there is audience fatigue, aging stars and a need to move from Tony Stark/Iron Man as a ‘hub’ for films.
Since we know Robert Downey Jr. is returning for Avengers 2 and 3, could it be that by the third flick his role will be downsized? Sounds likely.
But here’s the big news, El Mayimbe has actual plot details for the Doctor Strange flick! You can hear the first of their multi-week reveal of Doctor Strange‘s plot – I know, I know, lame, but as a news site, if we had a scoop that big we’d drag it our for as long as possible, too – in a video below the cut.
Warning though, while changes happen in pre-production, if this really is the plot of Doctor Strange these details will absolutely SPOIL it. I watched it because I can guarantee I’ll forget most of this by the time it releases, but if you’ve got an exemplary memory you may wish you hadn’t.
I’ll admit I know absolutely diddly about Doctor Strange. I thought he was Marvel’s answer to DC’s Dr. Fate, but apparently not. I like the whole science and magic angle this film will take and I’m definitely interested to hear more of El Mayimbe’s scoop. How about you guys? Does this sound like the Doctor Strange movie you want to see?
