‘Walking Dead’ to Celebrate 10 Years at SDCC

The Walking Dead is certainly one of the most popular shows on television, but it also remains one of the most popular comic books being published. This year, 2013, represents the 10th anniversary of the first issue of The Walking Dead comic book and Robert Kirkman is planning some birthday surprises and you’re invited to partake. The location? Why it will be at San Diego Comic Con, of course.

Kirkman and his Skybound imprint of Image Comics are working with a marketing firm to create the rockinest, zombiest, awesomest booth at this year’s con. For instance, the Walking Dead booth will feature the usual kind of comic con aperitiefs like zombie make-up, special guest appearances and a costume contest, and that will be followed up with the second annual Zombie Survival Machine. In case you missed it last year, fans get a chance to design their own version of a car to be your own personal zombie killing conveyance. The car in question this year will be a 2013 Hyundai Veloster, not exactly an urban assault vehicle, but I’m sure some enterprising nerd can make it work. The winner will be announced at New York Comic Con.

“I had so much fun designing last year’s Zombie Survival Machine that I wanted to invite fans of The Walking Dead to share that experience and see their vision come to life at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con,” says Kirkman of designing last year’s Zombie Survival Machine, a 2012 Hyundai Elantra.

So what else zombie will be offered for The Walking Dead’s 10th birthday? How about the Walking Dead Escape? Fans will be able to take part in a 35-50 minute obstacle course playing the part of a survivor trying to out last the zombie apocalypse. The course will run for two days at Petco Park on July 19 and 20, and fans can either take part as a survivor or as one of the walking dead, but if you do choose to be a zombie you’ll have to subject yourself to two hours of pro-make-up, walker training and about two and a half hours in the pen as a zombie.

So it looks like it’s going to be an above average fun time at Comic Con if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead. Comic Con kicks off on July 17.
