The art of the movie poster seems lost on modern Hollywood (thanks Photoshop!), which is why we should probably take the opportunity to honor someone who created many of the iconic images that formed the backbone of our current popular culture.
Well, the time has come for renowned artist Drew Struzan. The long-in-the-works documentary about Struzan, Drew: The Man Behind The Poster directed by Erik P. Sharkey, is finally ready for release with its previously announced screening at Comic Con to be followed by a limited release screening in August.
According to Deadline, the Comic Con screening, which will take place on Friday July 19 at the Gaslamp 15 in San Diego, will be followed by a special engagement at the Cinema Village in New York City on August 16 before being rolled out to other cities. Drew will then be available to all on video-on-demand via distributor Kino Lorber later this fall.
Struzan’s work has been featured in poster art for a number of popular movies of the 70s, 80s, and 90s including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, The Goonies, batteries not included, Back to the Future, Hook and Blade Runner. He spent his early years designing album covers for the likes of Iron Sabbath, the Bee Gees, and Liberace, but he retired after doing art work for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
