Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
ABOVE: This Thorin cosplay is beautifully detailed but what makes it super fun is that under that beard is lady cosplayer Teal Pirate! That’s the great thing about cosplay, you can be anyone you want, even a different gender! [Fashionably Geek]
We’ve featured a few nerdy mailboxes, but this Darth Vader mailbox by SenseiMonkeyboy is one of the best we’ve seen. The lightsaber acts as the mailbox’s flag, while Vader’s head opens up to reveal the inside of the mailbox. I know what I’m making this weekend! [GeekTyrant]
Sound advice for all who will be attending SDCC or any other con. [The Mary Sue]
The lovely Girl Gone Geek (aka Jamila) showed off her Sandman inspired tattoo on her blog. I know that Sandman, and Gaiman in general, hold a special place in many of our hearts. I keep several Sandman quotes taped to the wall by my bed, but Jamila declared her eternal love for Sandman by tattooing the quote “Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.” An important sentiment for all of us to remember.
This is a close-up of a statue made entirely out of comics. That in and of itself is pretty cool but what makes this extra special are the comics that were used to create it. Creator Andrew Vickers had zero idea that he was using rare and valuable comics to sculpt his superhero – comics like 1963’s Avengers #1. All in all, the comics used in this statue are (were) worth upwards of $30,000. You can see more of the statue at ComicsAlliance.
I am not a fan of the fact that crop tops are back in style, but if you’re going to rock one, at least make it nerdy with this “Pros and Comics” top from Modcloth. If you’re not a cosplayer, it would great to wear this to SDCC.
Oh dear god this is amazing. If you go to the British Vogue website and type in the Konami Code, each page of the website will be adorned with stylish clever girls of the velociraptor variety. I am dying of glee right now. [The Mary Sue]
What nerd girl wouldn’t want an Adafruit Flora Arduino bra with Death Star and X-Wing appliques? [Fashionably Geek]
