In the new Comic Con-centric edition of Entertainment Weekly, there’s an odd tidbit of insight into the mind of Andrew Garfield, the young man who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Now we know that these are more progressive times in terms of people’s attitudes to sexual orientation, and certainly that’s reflected in comic books as well, but if Garfield had his way, the world would have to deal with a – he said it – gay Spider-Man.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he explains. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
So there you have it. Garfield recalled this bit from a conversation he had with Spider-Man producer Matt Tolmach, and apparently Garfield also talked about it with Amazing director Marc Webb. But how seriously has Garfield considered the possibility? Apparently, he’s also done a bit of casting on the issue…
“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire,” he adds. “He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
Wait! Is that the real reason that Shailene Woodley was cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2? The secret twist is that Peter Parker is going to dabble in dating dudes?! Now that would be quite the departure for these new Spider-Man films. Combined with the fact that Jordan has been named dropped as the Human Torch in Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot, and I think we might be through the looking glass here into the oddly compelling world of slash-fic come to life. But I digress…
Bastards, sound off with what I’m sure are benign opinions below.
