The Internet has spoken and this time around SyFy has actually listened. Today, SyFy announced the order for a Sharknado sequel. People of Manhattan, Look! Up in the Sky, it’s a bird! No, it’s a plane, No, it’s a crap load of hungry sharks! Run for your lives!
The Twitterverse is sure to be on fire in 2014 when the sequel premieres on SyFy. They’re holding a Twitter contest to name the movie. Tweet your submissions to @SyfyMovies using #Sharknado. Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President of Programming, explains,
Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel.
As corny as the first film was, it opened a floodgate of social media, a veritable feeding frenzy among journalists, politicians, and celebrities when the movie aired last week. Early word had SyFy considering a sequel, but all that was before the actual viewership was reported by Nielsen, a dismal average of 1.369 million people, which put those thoughts of a sequel in jeopardy.
Today’s announcement is surprising following the reality of the actual viewer numbers, but unsurprising as a marketing tool for the network.
Producer David Latt says of the production costs of Sharknado,
Sharknado is around the $2 million mark. We don’t break the bank for any one person or prop; we work backward and get cast from there. For this ensemble cast, including John Heard, it made sense for either the material or their time.
That’s pretty damn cheap for the amount of press and buzz SyFy has garnered from the movie and explains why SyFy felt comfortable going ahead and writing a check for the sequel.
