Seemingly out of left field, the BBC and executive producer Sam Mendes (Skyfall) have developed an incredibly huge production within the Focus Features series. The Hollow Crown adapts William Shakespeare’s four classic plays, Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V, and brings them to the small screen with an excellent cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, and Ben Whishaw, as the titular kings along with other notable stars Patrick Stewart, John Hurt, Simon Russell Beale, and Rory Kinnear.
Take a look at the trailer below and you’ll see how incredibly huge this production was, spanning the reigns of three kings with a total running time of over 500 minutes of screen time. The series has numerous nominations for BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) including Ben Whishaw for leading actor and Simon Russell Beale for supporting actor, and the Richard II episode for Best Single Drama.
The Hollow Crown will air on PBS’ Great Performances starting Friday September 20th, so set your DVR accordingly. The series will also be released on iTunes, VOD, and DVD on August 27th.
