Now that we’ve gotten a new Doctor for Doctor Who in Peter Capaldi, word is working its way around the Internet that he wasn’t the British sci-fi series first choice. Bill Nighy recently talked with Express UK revealing that he had been offered the role, but turned it down.
I didn’t want to be the Doctor. No disrespect to Doctor Who or anything, I just think that it comes with too much baggage.
He went on to say that Peter Capaldi was:
He’s a marvelous actor. he’ll be very good as the Doctor. he’ll bring a lot of wit and dry humor. He’s elegant and he looks great.
Now for my taste, Nighy would make a much better Master than Doctor. Perhaps we might get to see that if the Master makes an appearance in the next couple of seasons. It’s clear to see that an older Doctor was the game plan, with both actors clocking in at age 63 (Nighy) and 55 (Capaldi).
Does this news change any of your thoughts about the casting? I love stories about which actor turned down a role that then rocketed the replacement to fame. Of course, in this case, neither actor really needs much of a boost in the fame department, both are actors with critical and box office successes in their resumes.
