After weeks of guessing, and arm-chair casting, and Ouija Board manipulation, we have the name of the person who will next play Batman. He’s the actor who once took up the mantle of Daredevil, the man formally known as one-half of “Bennifer,” and after that train wreck he re-invented himself as a respected Academy Award-winning filmmaker. Yes fans, Ben Affleck has been cast as the Caped Crusader in the Man of Steel sequel Batman vs Superman according to Deadline.
Disappointed? If you are, I regret to inform you that this is official via Superman’s studio Warner Bros. “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” said Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production in a statement. “His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Director Zack Snyder, who will helm the follow-up to his Man of Steel, is equally enthusiastic about Affleck joining the fray. “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman,” he said. “He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”
Well Warner Bros. and Snyder seem pleased with themselves, but are you concerned yet? Keep in mind that the last time Affleck played a superhero, it turned out like this:
At least Affleck got a wife out of the deal. Anyway, I think Affleck took a lot of lumps from that period of his life and career, and who knows, maybe he learned a lot from the experience. Interestingly, Affleck was once offered the job of directing the Justice League movie, but I believe he expressed hesitancy at the time, a bit worried about jumping back into the superhero business. I wonder what’s changed? Let the speculation, and perhaps the petty bitching, begin.
Batman vs Superman is scheduled to be in a theater near you on July 17, 2015.
