Yep, James Spader.
Since it was announced that Ultron was going to be the villain in The Avengers‘ 2015 sequel (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), and that the story would not include Hank Pym, it’s been heavily speculated that Tony Stark would be the character to create the maniacal AI killing machine. From that speculation, the latest theory was drawn; that Iron Man’s beloved JARVIS, voiced by Paul Bettany, would go insane, build itself a robotic body, and become the films namesake villain, but that no longer seems the case.
With this casting news, that theory is pretty much out the window, but it’s still unsure just what Spader will be doing in the role of Ultron. Will he just be voicing the character? Will Whedon change the character to be some sort of Terminator-like cyborg? It’s definitely a choice that has caught many off guard, and that isn’t meant as a slight to Mr. Spader.
This news definitely surprises me, and I thought the JARVIS theory made a lot of sense, especially after the fans have sort of developed an attachment to it as its own character. With that being said, I’m definitely a James Spader fan, and I know he has what it takes to pull off the “calculating, all-powerful psycho” character, so I can’t wait to see what they do with this one.
