A couple of weeks ago, it was announced, to the surprise of many, that James Spader would be taking the role of Avenger nemesis, Ultron, in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. In a recent interview with Marvel.com, we finally got to hear what Joss Whedon himself had to say about the casting choice, and it probably wasn’t too much different from what just about all of us were thinking.

Spader was my first and only choice, he’s got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling. But he’s also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal, Spader can play all of the levels. He’s the guy to break the Avengers into pieces.

Once again, Whedon takes the words right out of my mouth. While it definitely caught me off guard, there’s no denying that Spader is perfect for the role, and that he embodies those traits in just about every role he’s ever played. If there’s anyone that can bring Ultron to the big screen, it’s James Spader. I mean, even in his stint on The Office he was a menacing, creepy genius, and that’s a comedy.

I love how much Whedon is looking forward to breaking down the super group, and with what we know of the film so far, I have to admit that he’s got me looking forward to it as well. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until May 1st, 2015.
