Mortal Kombat: Legacy

A few years back, director Kevin Tancharoen had wow’d gamers and nerds everywhere with his short film Mortal Kombat: Legacy. It depicted a fresh and realistic take on the Mortal Kombat franchise – representational of the fighting game and its characters, but in a modernized setting. It was brutal and disgusting, resembling the suspense and horror films like Seven and Saw. It was so cool!

Anyway, Mortal Kombat: Legacy was such a success, that Warner Bros. & YouTube channel Machinima.com wanted more of it, and granted Tancharoen an online web series . Which… should have been the raddest thing ever in way of video game adaptions, but it turned out to be such a downer. Anyone that watched the series (which debuted on Machinima.com‘s YouTube channel on April 11, 2011) will tell you how far off the reservation it was from the initial idea/film. Instead of it being straight-up realistic, it turned into a literal translation of the game. Exploring the birth of the characters in an other worldly fashion; like acknowledging the supernatural elements and all the kooky tournament stuff. It wasn’t a bad series per se, it just wasn’t the gritty version of Law and Order meets Mortal Kombat we expected it to be.

Regardless of the differences from concept to series, Season 1 got plenty of pop and appreciation from MK fans that a second series was approved. Here for you today, is a trailer of the all new second season. Admittedly, it looks bad-ass and gets me all nostalgic of the MK movie from 18 years ago. Check it out below and let us know what you think,

In the second season, the saga continues as Liu Kang and Ermac join the ranks of fighters introduced in the series’ first season, including Kenshi, Kung Lao, Kuai Lang, Stryker, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Scorpion and Sub- Zero. This new season uncovers the rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld. Chronicling the tournament and the interweaving storylines of the most beloved Kombatants, fans also will learn of the complex relationship between Liu Kang and Kung Lao and revisit the complicated family dynamic of Kitana and Mileena. The epic battle for EarthRealm has finally begun!
