Last week when we learned Doctor Who alum, Billie Piper was joining the new Showtime series, Penny Dreadful, it was the first I’d ever heard of it. The pitch is the series will follow literature’s most iconic and frightening figures as they survive in Victorian London. We’ll see the likes of Dorian Grey, Victor Frankenstein, Dracula and more as they deal with alienation in what Showtime is calling a, “psycho-sexual horror.”
During last night’s Dexter the first promo for Penny Dreadful was revealed, check it out,
Okay, so there’s not much there, but they’re setting a clear tone. I expect this series will fill the void soon to be left by HBO’s True Blood, but with a Victorian, gothic spin. What do you think? Excited to learn more about the “psycho-sexual horror”?
Penny Dreadful stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper and Harry Treadaway. Skyfall scribe John Logan is set to write all eight episodes of the series, with the director of that movie Sam Mendes executive producing. The first two episodes will be helmed by The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona.
Penny Dreadful will air on Showtime, some time, in 2014.
