When you think of some of the iconic muppets, monsters and other worldly creatures that have graced the big and small screen, chances are they were created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop – the legendary makers of movie magic. Founded in 1979 by the late Jim Henson, carried on by his son Brian Henson, the shop has earned its esteemed reputation with its creations appearing in such classics as Labyrinth, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dinosaurs (the TV show) and, of course, The Muppets. So what’s up with the venerable fabricators of fiction nowadays? The only sensible thing, of course. They’re getting their own reality based TV show…
Stemming from the success of SyFy’s hit show Face-Off, the network is going from movie make-ups to creature-building with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge.
“As Face Off does with SFX makeup application, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge showcases the incredible imagination and artistry of lifelike creature construction,” said (president of original content Mark] Stern. “We are honored to partner with The Jim Henson Company and Brian Henson on this series. The Creature Shop has set the bar for a caliber of work that is unmatched in quality, design and sheer imagination.”‘
Airing in 2014, the competition series will be judged by Brian Henson and others as they celebrate sensational creations.
Whatever your feelings about reality television and poor schmucks shaming themselves on camera just to get a job, you have to admit the process of creating monsters, ghouls, ghosts, aliens and whatever other wacky out of this world creatives dream up is fascinating.
Of course, with Fangasm and Heroes of Cosplay the bar has been set really low.
