With the coming of the almighty Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, it’s only natural that Who fans both old and new should expect something profoundly amazing from showrunner Steven Moffat. To many of us that means bringing in multiple Doctors and letting us get our nerd-boners up as we see our favorites returning to the screen for at least a little while. And while David Tennant will be making an appearance (along with once-companion Billie Piper), Christopher Eccleston is a no-show. So what’s the deal, Moffat?
In a recent interview with SFX, Moffat had these enlightening words for us:
“I had an initial contact with Chris and, in a very amiable and gentlemanly way, he didn’t feel that he could come back to it. There wasn’t any big fuss about it — I had a couple of meetings with him, and he was perfectly pleasant, and indeed quite enthused about the show, but he just doesn’t do that, it’s just not him.”
Well, Mr. Eccleston, you have let down your fans! Okay, I may be a little bitter about the situation, but at least we know why now. I guess we’ll just have to make due with the Doctors that we do get to see. On the plus side, Eccleston DID promise to be back for the 100th Anniversary Special. Now all we need to do is figure out a way to keep his head frozen in a jar.
So, Nerd Readers, if you had your choice of any Doctor (living or dead) to return for the 50th Anniversary, who would you choose?
Thanks to blastr for the heads-up.
