Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro always has a couple of projects on the go, and one of those currently spinning plates is Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to this past summer’s giant monster versus giant robot nerd-pleaser. But wait a minute, you may say, didn’t Pacific Rim tank at the box office? First, you’ve got some nerve buster! And second, according to Box Office Mojo, it’s made over $100 million domestically and another $300 million worldwide, effectively breaking even. So game on for a sequel? As far as del Toro’s concerned it’s game on for a sequel script at least.
While talk to a couple of different publications recently, del Toro confirmed to both that both he and screenwriter Travis Beacham were at work on the script for a second installment of Pacific Rim. Here’s what del Toro told IGN:
We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.
Indeed. Perhaps Legendary Pictures will wait and see how Pac-Rim performs on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD before giving the greenlight for number two. Of course, it will probably also depend on the quality of del Toro and Beacham’s script. The director extrapolated on his comments further with Rolling Stone:
Legendary gave me the absolute go-ahead with writing the screenplay, so Travis Beacham and I are working on it. As far as giving it a green light, that’s the big step of the process. We need to put together a budget and then they’ll make that decision, but everybody is unwavering in their love for the movie.
As for what’s involved in Pacific Rim part 2, rumors have included talk of a kaiju-jaeger hybrid and an evil Charlie Day as the film’s bad guy, but that’s all complete speculation at the moment. We’ll keep you posted with more news here if and when it develops.
What do you Bastards say to more Pacific Rim?
