It’s well past time for Wonder Woman – the foremost butt-kicking babe in DC’s arsenal of female comic book characters – to take center stage, or at least get some sort of cinematic lovin’. Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara agrees. He recently said “We need to get Wonder Woman on the big screen or TV.” While that may be the case, nothing seems to be officially in the works. Or is it? While there’s no news on the stand alone front, other than Tsujihara being burdened with glorious purpose, there is a rumor going around that Wonder Woman will make an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs. Superman.
Variety spoke with Greg Silverman, Warner Bros. president of creative development and worldwide production, about the introduction of Wonder Woman, as well as the Flash and Green Lantern. While he doesn’t outright confirm anything, it’s what he doesn’t say that gives way to the sneaking suspicion. Silverman said:
“We have been doing a lot of thinking for years about how to best use all those characters and we love them,” Silverman said.“Wonder Woman is an amazing character. I think it’s a great opportunity both for box office success, but also to have an amazingly powerful female superhero.
Considering he only mentioned Wonder Woman, the trade then specifically asked whether she is going to be part of the film, to which he replied:
“We are taking it all very seriously and are trying to do a plan that’s respectful to those characters and maximizes the stories as best they can. So everything that has been speculated are things that we’ve thought about.”
We couldn’t have expected Silverman to come right out and say “yes, Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League will be featured in the film”. On the other hand, he could have simply given us a solid “no!” and that would have been the end of it. So, suspicion remains. We’ll have to wait and see.
In my opinion, I think WB has significant plans for Wonder Woman and other JLA members, but nothing too substantial for the Man of Steel sequel. If anything, WB may pull from Marvel’s play book and tease something in a post credits seen, or give acknowledgements in a few Easter eggs, but that’s about it. With Batman, Supes, Lex Luthor and supporting cast all crammed in the film already, I can’t see any other big egos entering the mix.
