The rumor mill concerning future Spider-Man films has included the possibility that the franchise is building up to a face off between everyone’s favorite Wall-Crawler and the super-villain team-up of the Sinister Six. But for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 it sounds like there maybe another kind of super team-up that producers are looking at, a musical super-team!
As we know, there’s already been a musical shake-up for the Spider-Man sequel, with Dark Knight composer Hans Zimmer subbing for Amazing 1’s James Horner, and today a press release from Sony adds four more names to the roster of those giving symphonic resonance to the upcoming superhero movie. So who’s being recruited? Zimmer is pulling together a group made up of Neptunes member Pharrell Williams, Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Incubus guitarist Michael Einziger, and the legendary Dave Stewart, one half of the Eurythmics. Here’s what Sony had to say on the subject:
Hans Zimmer will work with Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger, and Dave Stewart to create music for The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, it was announced today by Lia Vollack, president of Worldwide Music for Sony Pictures…
Commenting on the announcement, Zimmer said, “Marc and I were talking about Spider-Man, and as the word got out, so many of our friends and musicians started calling us up, wanting to be a part of it, because they love Spider-Man. That was the thing that united all of us – the great love for Spider-Man. With all of these hugely talented people wanting to join us, it was Marc who said, ‘Why not start a band?’ Marc and I have had a great start jamming with everybody, and we still have a few surprises up our sleeve.”
Vollack added, “This kind of collaboration is only possible because of who Marc Webb is – not only a director but also a musician – combined with who Hans is and what Spider-Man means to so many people. Nobody has ever approached film music in this way before and this likely can never be replicated. We’re huge fans of Hans, Pharrell, Johnny, Mike, and Dave, and when combined, we know the result will be truly unique… and amazing!”
As a fan of movie music I’m intrigued, a Zimmer and Stewart team-up I think blends their styles well, but what will it sound like when it’s mixed with the hip-hop of Williams, the indie alternative of Marr and the suck rock of Einziger? It’s either going to be one of the most unique scores in recent film memory, or it’s going to the bloated affair that many think that the villain-loaded narrative of Amazing 2 will be. Still, color me curious.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in theaters May 2, 2014, and as previously reported this week, the first trailer will appear with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in December.
