If this keeps up, The CW may have to change its network initials to “DC.” Already enjoying success with Arrow, which is soon to spin-off The Flash and is now currently plugging away on an Hourman series, the netlet is looking to add a new series based on the Vertigo imprint comic iZOMBIE. And as an unexpected bonus, it’s being adapted by some very fan friendly writers.
According to Deadline, The CW has picked up a pitch by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero to add Chris Roberson and Michael Allred‘s undead tale to the CW line-up. Like the comic, the series will follow med student zombie Gwen who gets a job at the coroner’s office to have access to and feed on the delicious brains she craves. The side effect is she takes on the memories belonging to the person whose brains she eats, and using that knowledge, she helps the cops solve murders. Surprisingly, or unsurprisingly, the comic lasted only 28 issues.
Thomas and Ruggiero are well-known for their collaboration on the series (and upcoming movie) Veronica Mars, and it should be right up their quirky alley. Part Tru Calling and part Being Human, the comic doesn’t just feature zombie Gwen, but her best friends who include a ghost and a were-terrier. It has cult classic written all over it, but it might also have one (season) and done written all over it too.
Keep in mind that so far, this is just a pitch that’s been approved and there’s no word on if it will go to series, or even if a pilot will be made for consideration next spring. Either way, when you take into account Arrow, The Flash, and Hourman along with Constantine and Gotham on other networks, it’s a pretty good time to be a DC Comics and TV fan. We’ll have more news as it develops.
