Last month we got the news that Michael Arndt was being replaced as screenwriter on Star Wars: Episode VII by the film’s director: JJ Abrams, and its producer, Lawrence Kasdan–due primarily to time issues.
Now THR reports that the production is looking to cast the first new character to arise from the Abrams/Kasdan collaboration.
The new writers have apparently added a
40-something military man a la Matt Damon in Elysium.
No further information has been made available regarding this character’s role in the film’s plot….not that it would mean much, given that the film’s plot remains a carefully guarded secret.
Is Mr. Matt Damon-esque Alliance, Imperial, or Neutral? Good, Evil, or Neither? Jedi or Sith? Smuggler or Bounty Hunter? Is he from an established SW Universe human world like Corellia or Coruscant? Is he even necessarily human at all? We’ll just have to continue to wait and see.
The film is still looking to cast Episode VII‘s (God, I can’t wait until this thing has an actual name I can use in these!) young leads: A 17-to-18-year-old female and a 19-to-23-year-old male…but despite rumors regarding screen tests with every actor and actress in Hollywood that could remotely play that age range, there’s still no solid info regarding who’s on the movie’s short-list….Hell, we don’t even know for sure if there IS a short-list!
/Film has offered the intriguing possibility that this new character MIGHT be a lesser character from the original trilogy now in a lead role–the name Wedge Antilles is being thrown around….
Abrams HAS said that he wants to honor the original films in Ep.7, and this would be one way to accomplish that…But right now there’s no way to tell if this isn’t simply fanboy wish-fulfillment.
In any case, Abrams better get his ass in gear if he really expects to begin filming in just a few months and have the movie ready for its scheduled Dec. 18 2015 release.
Tune in next time, when I’m sure I’ll have further reports on exactly how much we DON’T know about the new Star Wars films.
