Every couple of years, a “magical” occurrence takes place in Hollywood, and two films so alike in basic plot as to just barely avoid plagiarism lawsuits are released at roughly the same time. We’ve seen this phenomenon with volcano flicks (Dante’s Peak, Volcano), asteroid attacks (Armageddon, Deep Impact), and, just recently, White House sieges (Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down).
Next year, Two Hercules films will go head-to-sweaty, muscly head: The one everyone will watch starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: Hercules: The Thracian Wars–and the Deep Impact of this pairing: Renny Harlin‘s Hercules: The Legend Begins–which has the honor of being released (and likely forgotten) first. Hit the jump for a shorter, official version of the previously released 3 minute trailer.
Renny Harlin made a name for himself with second-tier action flicks that made decent money in the 1990s (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger), and the trailer does kinda give the impression of ultraviolent, turn off your brain fun…
Not much if you’re looking for anything deeper, though: Harlin’s Hercules: The Legend Begins (Kellan Lutz plays the title demigod–that guy from at least one of the Twilight films, don’t ask me which) seems to think it’s Gladiator with a chick flick grafted onto it…Yeah, the big Lutz is in love. The only real difference is this film looks even LESS historically appropriate than Gladiator (there’s a difference between Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome–they’re not interchangeable, Renny).
Oh, and apparently once Herc accepts his Godly lineage, he becomes Thor and gets to throw lightning around….I guess I missed that part in Greek mythology.
Anyway, you can check out Hercules: The Legend Begins on January 10th, 2014…
OR, if you prefer going to the movies with other people, you can catch The Rock in essentially the same film on July 25th.
