It’s the end of the year, and you know what that means: lots and lots of Best and Worst lists! True, but it also means that awards season is just around the corner. Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, AKA: the people who give out the Oscars, announced their short list of 10 potential nominees for the Best Visual Effects category, and you’ll notice a definite nerdy trend amongst the ten films that will be vying for that golden trophy early next year.
So who has made the Top 10? Let’s count them down in alphabetical order (so to speak).
- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
- Iron Man 3
- The Lone Ranger
- Star Trek Into Darkness
- Thor: The Dark World
- Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim
- World War Z
That sounds like a pretty good line-up for a movie marathon, but the question now becomes which five movies will make it to the next round as official Academy Award nominees, and which ones will have to pack up and leave after being voted out of the Oscar race? My guess for the five nominees? Let’s go with Gravity, The Hobbit, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim and World War Z (which only makes the cut for its association with Brad Pitt); but look for Gravity to win the award itself.
Will I be right? Votes for the final five have to be cast before Thursday, January 9, 2014 and the Visual Effects nominees, along with all the other Oscar nominations, will be announced at 5:30 am on Thursday, January 16, 2014.
