It looks as though room on Coulson’s plane is about to become even sparser. We’re being told that the 14th episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will see two more members being added to Coulson’s currently six-person team, one of which is coming into the show with deep ties to the pasts of two team members.
In the description of these two new additions, we can clearly see that they are trying to pump some diversity into the cast, while trying to further the backstories of both Agent Coulson and Agent Ward.
An African-American agent who specializes in combat/weapons, and a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent/munitions expert who has past ties to both Coulson and Ward.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has an overabundance of white guys who like to stand huddled over tables, so throwing in some folks from other races and ethnicities would be refreshing, even though I worry about a few of the current characters getting lost in the shuffle. The link to Coulson and Ward should add an interesting wrinkle to the team’s dynamic, but I could see that being handled in an arc across a few episodes, or even a recurring guest star role. With these two joining up, that would put the team at 8 members; do they really need that big of a team?
If there’s one thing the show hasn’t been lacking, it’s a group of diverse characters that are just waiting to be explored. With these new faces showing up, it’s hard not to think that characters like Fitz/Simmons and Melinda May will continue to be overlooked (or worse) as the show moves forward.
If you’ve read any of my Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reviews here on the site, you already know how much I love Fitz and Simmons; I can’t understand why they would add more characters, when these two (and even Melinda May) don’t get enough time to develop as it is, and are obviously played by talented enough actors to handle any sort of depth required of them. I can see some overcrowding, unless these two newbies joining Coulson’s crew is an indication that someone(s) may be on their way out.
Please, Joss, don’t kill Fitz. Don’t do it.
