According to Variety‘s recent report on the recruitment of writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to assist Roberto Orci in penning the latest entry in the “Nu-Trek” franchise, director Joe Cornish is no longer at the top of Paramount‘s short-list of filmmakers to take over the series from JJ Abrams.
There is, as yet, no information regarding who Paramount’s new front-runner for the Trek 3 director’s chair is.
Other names that have surfaced include GI Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu (though Chu’s reps denied that Paramount had approached him) and Rupert Wyatt, director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
The film has no official release date yet–the studio, however, is aiming for a 2016 release.
