Just yesterday, Scott Snyder announced that Batman #28 will give us a sneak peak of the DCU six months into the future. This morning DC upped the ante by announcing The New 52: Futures End, a new weekly series, part of which is set five years into the future.
We now have two weekly DC titles, the other Being Batman: Eternal by Scott Snyder and James Tynion.
Not sparing any talent with these weekly offerings, DC revealed that Futures End will be written by heavy hitters Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen, Brian Azzarello and Dan Jurgens. Jurgens will also provide art along with Ethan Van Sciver, Jesus Merino, Aaron Lopresti and others TBD once deadlines become an issue.
Futures End will debut with a “zero issue” as part of the Free Comic Book Day event on May 3. #0 will be drawn by Van Sciver with the first proper being released later that month.
Lemire explained that he series will focus on the past, present and future of the New 52 universe. Featuring different characters in each era, it will “explore the nature of what a hero is.” Characters mentioned include Frankenstein, Firestorm and Batman Beyond, who will be making his first ‘in-continuity’ appearance. Lemire added, “he’ll become part of the New 52.”
The cast will grow significantly as the series goes on. Lemire says the writers have been tasked with creating “new characters and new concepts that will hopefully have a life beyond the series.”
In the teaser are released today, DC shows us Batman Beyond hovering over a very OMAC-ed out Justice League. Apparently a lot can happen in five years.
