Paramount Pictures is dusting off The Naked Gun franchise and giving Ed Helms (The Hangover, The Office) a badge and a gun to star in the goofy reboot. Can Helms live up to the zany legacy that comedic genius Leslie Nielson left behind?
Helms is a great choice, he has a great deadpan style, but the truly important news about the reboot is that the comedy writing team of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant of Reno 911! are on the case to handle the scripting chores. Those two can capture the goofy, zaniness of the originals.
The whole thing started with a short-lived TV series called Police Squad, which followed Detective Frank Drebin as he tried to solve cases in the most hap-hazardous way possible. The series was then taken to the big screen with three very successful films: The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988), The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) and The Naked Gun 33 /3: The Final Insult (1994).
