This must mean F-Troop: The Movie couldn’t get enough funding…
No one is surprised anymore when a “classic” TV series gets refurbished as a modern day film–or even a film franchise (Get Smart, Bewitched, Charlie’s Angels, Dark Shadows, The A-Team, etc.). The only thing that’s really noteworthy is that this practice continues regardless of the overall poor quality of such films, and the amount of money they lose for their studios.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is going ahead with a cinematic adaptation of Gilligan’s Island–possibly to capitalize on the popular show’s 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated next year.
The proposed reboot’s executive producers are said to include Lloyd J. Schwartz and Ross Schwartz–sons of Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch creator Sherwood Schwartz. As well as Happy Days co-star and daughter of television legend Phil Silvers–Cathy Silvers, for whatever that’s worth.
The only confirmed cast member as yet is Josh Gad, best known for roles in the Steve Jobs biopic Jobs, and “dramedies” like Love and Other Drugs, and Thanks For Sharing. Gad will also co-write the Gilligan’s Island film with Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. Gad collaborated with them on the unsuccessful 2012 sitcom 1600 Penn, where he played the slacker son of the President (Bill Pullman–no connection to Independence Day, sadly).
What role Gad will play is still unknown.
As for what we can expect from the movie, I’ve never seen 1600 Penn–so I have no idea how good this writing team is at comedy. If they go for a snarky, self-referential update like The Brady Bunch films did, it might possibly be entertaining….
Frankly, in this age of wi-fi, satellites, and global positioning systems, I can’t see how one could possibly take a film about a group of people who get marooned on an uncharted island during a 3 hour pleasure cruise REMOTELY seriously:
Screw the coconut radios–somebody’s GOTTA have an iPhone!
