Evangeline Lilly plays a character never created by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Considering that the elf warrior Tauriel has created by Peter Jackson and his collaborators from scratch, it would make sense that the actress asked to play her would have some kind of input into making her character. As it turned out, Lilly had only one caveat for playing Tauriel, and it was a promise that eventually had to be broke when the Hobbit trilogy went into reshoots last year. So what was the promise, and how was it broke?
Well, you remember Lost don’t you? One the major storylines of the series was the love triangle between Kate (played by Lily), Jack (Matthew Fox) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway). Considering that whole thing ate up six years of her life on Lost, she was trepidatious about getting caught in another romantic geometry issue, so she made Jackson promise that he wouldn’t get Tauriel into one. However…
“We came back for reshoots in 2012 … and they were like, ‘Uh, the studio would really like to see…’ And I was like, ‘Here we go. Here we go’ [shakes her bowed head]. And sure enough I’m in another love triangle.”
And that’s how Tauriel found herself caught between Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and dwarf warrior Kili (Aidan Turner). It’s not quite love and loss on a mysterious island, but being one side of romantic triangle is probably something that gets old fast.
