Recent news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going to produce Sandman seems to have given way to confirmation that the other actor in contention to fill the boots of Dr. Hank Pym, Anchorman 2‘s Paul Rudd, is indeed the frontrunner to play the lead in Ant-Man, Marvel Studios’ first film in its Phase 3 program.
According to The Wrap, “multiple sources” have told them that Rudd is now in negotiations with the studio to officially come aboard the Edgar Wright film. Official comment from either Marvel and Rudd has not been given, but many have noted from recent Anchorman press, including an appearance hosting Saturday Night Live, that Rudd looks slimmer, as if he were getting in shape for something. The Wrap adds that their sources say Rudd has already begun Ant-Man training.
Wright hasn’t talked too much about the tone of his Ant-Man yet, but the selection of Rudd seems to lend credit to the idea that the film might lean more to the comedic, or at least the light-hearted. Producer Kevin Feige previously said that Wright had originally pitched Ant-Man as a heist film, which could strike the right balance between superhero movie and comedy, a fine line that an actor like Rudd should find it easy to walk on. Of course, this is all still circumstantial until we get the official casting announcement.
Ant-Man is scheduled to be in theaters everywhere on July 31, 2015.
