Caught up in all the holiday hullabaloo, I’m almost forgot next week is not only our commercialized celebration of the winter solstice, but also Matt Smith‘s final adventure as The Doctor. On Christmas Day, the Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor” premieres, and with it, the Fall of the Eleventh. Being only a week out it’s about time for BBC America to release this extended trailer showing off more from the special than ever before,

Leave it to Steven Moffat to mix holiday cheer with the Eleventh Doctor’s impending death. I’m surprised to see Trenzalore as the setting, too, but I guess it signals the end of the Eleventh more so than The Doctor altogether. Then again, Moffat was clear that Eleven is the final Doctor.

And did you catch that quick shot of The Doctor opening the door marked 11? That harkens all the way back to the Series Six episode, “The God Complex”, with the hotel and the minotaur? Remember that one?

We already know Peter Capaldi is coming in as the Twelfth Doctor next year, so it’ll be interesting to see how Doctor Who addresses one of the series’ longest standing rules. I suspect they’ll just flat out ignore that 12 regeneration rule, as is often the case when your show’s been going on for 50 years. Sometimes, things have to change in order for the show to move forward.

Don’t miss the Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor”, airing on BBC One, BBC American, and SPACE on Christmas Day, December 25th.
