No Rogue in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

It was confirmed in an Entertainment Weekly interview posted today that power-absorbing mutant Rogue (Anna Paquin) will not be appearing in the next chapter of the X-Men film franchise: Days Of Future Past. Director Bryan Singer told EW that Rogue’s only scene in the film had to be cut.

Singer explained his decision, saying:

Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.

Originally, Rogue appeared in a rescue scene filmed early in the movie’s production which also featured Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). It’s unfortunate that she had to be removed from the final cut, but with the wealth of characters, old and new, that DOFP is said to be featuring, I suppose some sacrifices had to be made–it happens.

Fortunately, there was no bad blood between Singer and Paquin over the decision. The director explained that the quality of Paquin’s performance was never in question, and the actress took the news with grace and professionalism:

She did a fantastic job. She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat. She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.

Perhaps Rogue (and thus Paquin) will return to the franchise in Apocalypse, or some other future X-Men project. It’s too soon to say, but we can certainly hope.
