So you’re probably all out there thinking to yourselves, “Hey! What ever happened to that Jonny Quest live-action adaptation that they were planning? I’ve been waiting around for years to spend my money on this thing!” Or maybe you’re thinking nothing of the sort. Or maybe you don’t even know who or what the hell Jonny Quest is. One way or the other, the quest for Jonny Quest to become a live-action film is still on and Peter Segal – the man who was previously involved with the project – still has his hands in the pie.
Segal, in case you don’t know, is the man responsible for such mediocre comedies as The Longest Yard, Nutty Professor II, Anger Management and Tommy Boy. Now he wants to try bringing this 60s cartoon to life, adapting it in live-action style to the big screen. After many long years of nothing, Segal has stepped up and said that Jonny Quest will be his next project. They’ve got a script, are working on rewrites and just need to make sure the studios will approve of and pay for the damned thing.
If you’re in the dark about Jonny Quest, it was a one-season cartoon about an 11-year-old that, with the help of his father and companions, ran around getting in all sorts of life-endangering adventures. And though it bombed back in the day, re-runs made it popular and they brought it back in cartoon format on two different occasions. If you’ve ever seen Venture Bros., you’ll probably recognize the characters of Jonny, Roger “Race” Bannon, Dr. Benton Quest and Hadji, albeit in quite a different context.
What say you, Nerd Readers? Anyone out there actually remember the old Jonny Quest show? Do you think there’s a reason to make a movie out of it? Can Segal produce something that would be worth watching?
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
