If you haven’t heard of it already, it’s time to open your ears and eyes and pay attention to the upcoming Showtime series, Penny Dreadful. This show takes a mish-mosh of popular literary characters, from Frankenstein and his monster to Dorian Gray, and places them within a new tale, one that writer/executive producer John Logan (Skyfall) wishes to use to gain insight into their humanity. And while mixing old horror classics may sound like something that people have done before, in both goods ways (Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) to very bad ways (the movie Helsing), we may have a winner on our hands. Check out the latest production blog below and see what you think.
And while Logan’s passion for the project already has me intrigued, it’s the cast and crew that have truly piqued my interest. Director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Road to Perdition) has been helping out in the writing department and Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) is in charge of directing the first two episodes. Add to that a not-quite-A-list of actors including Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper and Eva Green and you’ve got a serious project here. Let’s just hope they can deliver.
Penny Dreadful will be showing up some time in 2014, though we currently know not when.
