Comedy Central‘s Stephen Colbert may be satirizing right-wing pundits on his popular talk show, but his nerdity is by no means fictional–particularly where the works of J.R.R. Tolkien are concerned. Indeed, LOTR/Hobbit director Peter Jackson even declared the writer-comedian the biggest “Tolkien Geek” he’d ever met.

THR and Playboy had previously indicated that Colbert might make an appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug….Today, we have visual confirmation from a sharp-eyed Redditor in GIF and screencap form (after the jump).

Even if you saw The Desolation of Smaug, odds are you overlooked Colbert’s appearance in the film–here’s the GIF:

And the screencap:

If you still can’t place the scene–here’s the aforementioned Redditor’s description:

Okay, it’s right as the dwarves are sneaking into Laketown. Bard’s son stops them and says that there are spys [sic] watching the house. Shortly after it shows Bard and his Son walking alone and the camera pans to the right and shows Stephen looking at them and he turns his head and his eyepatch falls down.

Yet another reason why Mr. Colbert is one of the most influential Nerds in the universe.

And there’s more!

Not only did Stephen get to appear in his favorite fictional universe, so did his wife:

And his sons:

I’m seeing this movie next Saturday–and you can be DAMN sure I’m gonna have my eye out for the various Colberts 😉
