What do you think of the above screencap? It’s from an episode of the animated series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and on its own it’s fairly innocuous, but posted on the website of filmmaker Edgar Wright the image takes on new and glorious context. As we all know, Wright is working on the big screen, live-action version of Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd, but there’s a degree of uncertainty as to which Ant-Man Rudd will be portraying. So how does a screen grab from a cartoon shed light on this context? Read on.
The image was taken from an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes called “To Steal an Ant-Man.” The plot is about one Scott Lang, who steals the Ant-Man costume from Hank Pym in order to go on a crime spree with it. As to context for the live-action movie, there’s been previous comments that the script is framed as a heist movie, so it begs the question: is this official confirmation that this is Wright’s direction for the film, that Rudd will play Scott Lang stealing the Ant-Man suit from a yet to be cast Hank Pym?
For historical context, here’s an interview that Wright did with Superhero Hype back in 2006:
Is to have a film that basically is about Henry Pym and Scott Lang, so you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60′s, in sort of “Tales to Astonish” mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him.
