Hang onto your badges Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans, none other than Bill Paxton, the GAME-OVER man himself is joining the series for at least a four episode story arc. What character will Paxton be playing?

Here’s Jed Whedon teasing the character Paxton will be playing, Agent Garrett:

We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger… when Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of SHIELD. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.

Word around the Internet water cooler is that Agent Garrett makes a surprisingly explosive entrance to the series. Given Bill Paxton’s fascinating fatal run-ins with franchise bad guys – Terminator, Aliens, Predator – could we see another big Marvel Comics bad guy added to the list of Paxton Death in a Gruesome Manner Scene?

You might want to stop here if you don’t want to know any possible spoilers that are talked about below.

OK, let’s look at what the Marvel Wiki has to say about Garrett’s character:

John Garrett is a former SHIELD agent who was made into a cyborg to save his life…

Despite a history of repeated criminal offenses which included assault, battery, grand larceny, and four counts of statutory rape. John ended up becoming an agent of SHIELD, with his past records clandestinely expunged.

After receiving certain injuries in his line of duty, John was provided with a steel plate in his head that could house a recorder, as well as a cybernetic left hand… recovered by SHIELD and upgraded to a cybernetic body by ExTechOp.

Hmm, remember those thoughts about Deathlok? Perhaps Agent Garrett is working from another angle that will match up with Coulson’s search for answers about his own recovery and the super soldier program that Centipede is trying to create.

Paxton joining the series for more than one episode is huge. Much bigger than any one-shot, half a minute cameo from any of the Marvel movie superheros. The only thing that would make this news better is if Paxton gets behind the camera and directs a couple of AOS episodes. He’s as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it.

Any thoughts?
