With Disney/Lucasfilm looking to capitalize off of the return of the Star Wars franchise, they have several projects in the works. One of the avenues that they will be taking in order to expand the Star Wars universe is in the form of the solo/origin/spin-off flicks. So far, the rumors have put Han Solo and Boba Fett at the top of the spin-off “to-do” list, which is fine planning for most fans, though many are concerned about what these extra films may do to Star Wars canon, particularly where it comes to the original trilogy. In order to address some of these concerns, the big cheese herself, Kathleen Kennedy had a few words to say. Check her response out below.
When talking to The Straits Times, Kennedy had this to say:
George [Lucas] was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, Episode Seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created….There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear.
Of course, if what she says is interpreted literally, that means no Han Solo flick. I’m guessing we’re just going to have to wait until Darth Mouse decides to make the official announcements or we’ll just be chasing speculation.
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
