Forbes Magazine, probably the world’s best known financial publication–famous for it’s listings of the planet’s wealthiest and most powerful denizens–gave the nod to Marvel Comics pioneer Stan Lee, ranking him as the 9th most influential celebrity on Earth.
Forbes published a list of the 10 Most Influential Celebrities–with director Steven Spielberg at the top and our old friend George Lucas at #3. Lee was honored with the #9 spot not merely for being the creator of some of the world’s best known comic book characters, but for being one of the chief architects of the recent superhero movie boom. Without Stan’s work, characters like the Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and the X-Men would still be confined to the pages of comic books.
And his ubiquitous cameos in just about every Marvel production have certainly added to his influence. As Forbes puts it:
Maybe it’s all those cameos in Marvel movies. Lee doesn’t usually show up on this list but the comic creator is responsible for the characters in some of the biggest movies in recent years.
As I mentioned Spots 1 and 3 went to Spielberg and Lucas respectively. The new TV series Extant starring Halle Berry is expected to be a big hit for Spielberg–and Lucas nabbed the #3 spot on the strength of the ongoing buzz regarding the new Star Wars trilogy.
As for the rest of the list–it’s filled with names you’d expect to hear: Oprah Winfrey, Bono, Martin Scorsese, Barbara Walters, and Ron Howard…and Dr. Mehmet Oz, for some reason.
In honor of Stan The Man’s achievements, here’s a compilation vid of all his Marvel movie cameos:
