In a world where remakes and reboots seem to outnumber original projects by 10 to 1 comes yet another old movie being turned into a television series. This one is the campy sci-fi classic known as Barbarella. And while news of its production has been on and off again, it does appear as if the series has finally found a home – on Amazon.
Being produced by Nicholas Winding Refn (Pusher, Valhalla Rising), the quality of this man’s name combined with the cult following of the original movie may have been what prompted the interest from Amazon Studios. Currently they’ve greenlit the project, but whether it continues beyond that inception point remains to be seen.
Refn is receiving some production assistance from Martha De Laurentiis (wife of the original movie’s producer) and has a script ready courtesy of Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. As skeptical as I am to see yet another remake, particularly when it gets dragged over to TV, the names attached to this look pretty solid so far.
So what do you think, Barbarella fans? Can this work as a television series? Or is it yet another case of tapping the well to recycle ideas? Or both?
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
