It looks like a little more news concerning the development of the new Star Wars flick has reached the Internet, this time with a healthy dose of official confirmation and much less rumormill nonsense. In a recent chat with the press at the SAG Awards, none-other-than J.J. Abrams himself answered a few questions about how things are going and addressed a few of the rumors that are dominating the web right now. Scroll down to check out what he had to say.
One of best bits of news is that the script is officially done. Starting with a script crafted by Toy Story 3 writer, Michael Arndt, Abrams and Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan put the finishing touches on it and it is ready to go. That, of course, means that they can start in with some official casting and, the best part, some official casting announcements so that we can stop all the damn speculation.
And speaking of casting, it looks like the rumor that Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad) was being talked to was indeed truth. According to Abrams:
He is one of the actors that we’ve talked to, yeah. But, you know, it’s not often that I read about actors that I’m going to be meeting. I get to read articles about actors who are going to come in. And so I get to see someone and say, ‘Oh, I read that I was going to see you. It’s very nice to see you.’ It’s usually agents talking to people about what’s happening. It’s just a lot of noise.
Abrams also took some time to discuss whether he would be trying to bring Episode VII into the IMAX generation. He had this response regarding that questionable move:
The problem with IMAX is it’s a very loud camera. It’s a very unreliable camera. Only so much film can be in the camera. You can’t really do intimate scenes with it. It’s slow. They break down often. Having said that, they’re working on digital versions of these and so there may be a version one day. But we’re going to be shooting this next movie on film.
So there you have it folks, some actual Star Wars news that didn’t originate from the mysterious and unnamed “source” that’s always busy spreading rumors. Stay tuned for even more rumors in the coming months. And maybe even some more official news stuff too!
Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
