As the Television Critics Association Winter press tour winds down, we get some juicy (in nerd terms) pieces of new information about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Of course, one of the most frequently heard complaints about the show (and there are many) is that S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t pay enough lip service to the comic books. Well, it seems like that’s going to change pretty significantly in upcoming episodes.
As per previously reported rumors, it will be revealed that in an upcoming episode of the series, J. August Richards‘ Mike Peterson character will turnout to be the cybernetic superhero Deathlok. We know that Mike survived the blast in the mid-season finale and at some point was implanted with a cybernetic eye by an unseen force, but all this seems prelude to the revelation in the February 4th episode, where we learn that Mike’s story has been an origin for Deathlok all along.
Here’s a press-type release from ABC:
A classic Marvel Comics icon who is celebrating his 40th anniversary this year, Deathlok will be brought to live-action life for first time ever on the all-new episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” premiering Tuesday, February 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
Transformed into the cybernetic solider against his will, Mike Peterson (J. August Richards) must struggle to find the man in the machine. With a high-tech eye that allows him to see through walls, super strength and increased speed courtesy of a cybernetic leg, will Deathlok fight alongside the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or against them?
“We have been waiting all season for this moment where we can reveal that Mike Peterson’s story arc is an origin story,” said Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell. “We’re thrilled to have J. August Richards playing Deathlok and to have our audience enjoy this favorite Marvel character on the show.”
“If you would have asked when I was nine-years old what I wanted to be, I would have said a super hero and I’m so excited to be one now as an adult on TV!” added J. August Richards. “It’s a dream come true.”
Deathlok is 40 this year? Has it really been that long? Anyway, in other S.H.I.E.L.D. news, the recent announcement that Lady Sif, and her portrayer Jaimie Alexander, would be guest starring on the show had people curious about what role the Thor character will play in the her upcoming appearance, and the question’s been answered via Marvel’s Twitter feed:

And now you might be asking, “Who’s Lorelei?” Well, she’s an Asgardian villainess that’s based on a character from Germanic mythology, and is an occasional thorn in Thor’s side. Eric Goldman from IGN revealed that actress Elena Satine will play the part of Lorelei in the Sif episode, and if her name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you recognize her from that episode of Smallville where she played Mera, the wife of Aquaman.
So there you go, haters. I mean granted, it’s no surprise appearance by Captain America or Hawkeye, but all these name brand characters should do something about silencing S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s critics in that one respect. Right? I guess we’ll see.
