When it comes to the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios must like what they see because words come to the surface that directors Anthony and Joe Russo have been tapped to stick around to make the third solo Captain America movie.
According to Variety, the studio has expressed interest in having the Russos return for the next Captain America movie, but formal negotiations won’t begin until after The Winter Soldier’s April release date. The scuttlebutt is that Marvel likes what they’re seeing with The Winter Soldier and that it’s also doing well with preview audiences as well. That combination means that its worth Marvel’s while to hold on to the Anthony and Joe Russo until they see if the third leg of their milking stool, the box office performance, is as sturdy.
If the rumor is true, then this is a another departure for Marvel Studios who haven’t been too keen on repeats in terms of directors for their recent film efforts – Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and The Winter Soldier. It’s also interesting that we have yet to hear anything about development on Thor 3, especially since The Dark World came out almost four months ago.
As to when we might see Captain America 3, Marvel does have release dates in 2016 and 2017 scoped out with no specific title yet assigned to them, so could one of those spaces be earmarked for another Captain America adventure? I guess we’ll find out, probably, around Comic Con.
More news as it develops.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in theaters everywhere on April 4.
